Our story

Two brothers. One idea.
No exit plan.

GivenGain was founded in 2001 by brothers Johannes and Jaco van Eeden, three years before they started PayProp.

At the time, online fundraising was still in its infancy. Most charities relied on direct mail, events and telephone campaigns. Johannes and Jaco believed the internet could do something different: rather than help charities reach more donors, it could help supporters reach the people they already knew.

That simple idea became GivenGain.

People give through people.

Milestones

  • 2001Johannes and Jaco van Eeden found GivenGain with the goal of helping supporters raise money for the causes they care about.
  • 2004They launch PayProp, which grows into one of the world’s leading property-payment platforms, processing billions in rental payments each year.
  • 2009The GivenGain Foundation is established in Switzerland, placing the platform under non-profit stewardship.
  • 2021GivenGain Foundation USA is established as a US 501(c)(3), expanding the organization’s international nonprofit footprint.
  • 2022Humanstate sells a controlling stake in PayProp to AKKR. GivenGain is not part of the transaction and continues independently under its nonprofit structure.
  • 2022–2024GivenGain undergoes the largest redevelopment in its history. The platform is rebuilt from the ground up with new technology, fundraising capabilities, payment infrastructure and event tools.
  • 2024The new GivenGain platform launches. Johannes returns full-time as Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization into its next chapter.
  • 2025GivenGain Foundation UK is established, completing a nonprofit structure spanning Switzerland, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Protecting the mission

Most technology companies are built to be sold.

GivenGain was built to last.

As the organization grew, Johannes and Jaco wanted to ensure that it would always remain dedicated to charities, regardless of who led it in the future.

Rather than keeping GivenGain as a privately owned technology company, the founders placed its long-term stewardship in the hands of nonprofit foundations.

Today, GivenGain operates through nonprofit foundations in Switzerland, the United States and the United Kingdom.

The GivenGain intellectual property is exclusively licensed to the Swiss foundation, while Humanstate continues to develop and support the platform under a long-term license.

This means GivenGain has no shareholders, no private owners and no exit strategy.

Every surplus is reinvested into improving the platform and helping charities raise more.

Today

Today, GivenGain helps charities, fundraisers and events connect with donors in more than 190 countries.

  • 1.2 million+ donors
  • $227 million+ raised for good
  • 6,900+ charities supported
  • 190+ countries reached

What has changed over the past two decades is the scale.

What has not changed is the original idea.

People give through people.
